A chemical peel is a body treatment technique used to improve and smooth the texture of the facial skin using a chemical solution that causes the dead skin to slough off and eventually peel off.

The regenerated skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin. Thus the term chemical peel is derived. Some types of chemical peels can be purchased and administered without a medical license, however people are advised to seek professional help from a dermatologist, esthetician, plastic surgeon, oral and maxillofacial surgeon, or otolaryngologist on a specific type of chemical peel before a procedure is performed.

Types of skin peels

Mechanical skin peel. Mechanical peel can be performed with different types of substances which contain exfoliating particles. These scrubbing particles can be made from the different kinds of natural and synthetic materials.
Chemical skin peel : Chemical peels usually contain natural acids which are derived from fruits or milk and help to dissolve the “ glue ” between skin surface and dead cells layer. These acids usually are Lactic acid (derived from sour milk), Glycolic acid (derived from sugar cane), Malic acid (derived from apples), Salicylic acid (derived from sweet birch), Tartaric acid (from grapes) etc.
Enzyme peel : These peels work by dissolving dead cells layer without friction and don’t irritate the skin like mechanical and acid peels. Enzyme skin peels usually contain Papain enzyme found in Papaya, Bromelain enzyme derived from Pine apple and Pumpkin proteolytic enzymes.

Chemical Peel

Chemical peels are popular because they successfully remove dead skin cells, clear clogged pores, eliminate whiteheads and blackheads, correct discoloration, and generate the growth of new skin. Your dermatologist will evaluate your skin and determine whether a peel can help remedy your concerns and which type of peel is right for you. A chemical peel that contains salicylic, glycolic or other alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) is used for minor concerns. Trichloroacetic acid is a stronger substance and is used for medium peels. Phenol is the strongest peel chemical, and it makes the most dramatic difference, but the deep peels it is used in also have the longest recovery period – and also carry the most risk

Post-procedure care instructions

While chemical peels tend to be very successful at tackling the signs of aging, the effects are not permanent. Remember, these types of facial peels cannot actually stop your skin from aging, but they may be the next best thing.
